Circular walk of central Luxor

Luxor comes alive in the evening and in summer it is definitely the only time to wander around due to the extremely high daytime temperature.

Wherever you are staying in Luxor all taxi drivers know (regrettably) McDonalds and that is where we start this walk, well actually we like to start just a few yards down the road at Sindbads Garden for a drink - water, soft drinks, nescafe, beer etc at very reasonable prices compared to the hotels and cruise boats. This is not a complicated or long walk but the hassle factor and shopping can make it take much longer than you may at first expect.

Hopefully this map makes the entire walk very clear.

Entrance to El Souk

Leaving Sindbads you walk along past McDonalds with Luxor Temple on your left before you reach the entrance to El Souk - the old market- which is now very modern and paved. Walk through enjoying the hassle, perhaps stop at the coffee shop half way through, before reaching, what is for Luxor, a main road. You can't miss this as there are metal barriers to stop you walking straight into the road! On the left, in the direction of the traffic, you will clearly see the Emilio Hotel. Cross the road and walk down past the Emilio to the end of the road where if you look slightly to the right you will see the new Savoy Bazaar. The old single floor Tourist Bazaar was completely rebuilt in 2006 to have shops on three levels and now clearly named as the Bazar Savoy or as the new plastic sign says Savoy Market.

Cross the road and enjoy some shopping. The ground floor is less interesting than the first floor which has a better range of shops and some really nice locally made pieces. There is also a reasonably priced restaurant at either end of this floor, the Amoun and the El Hussain that were very popular in their old location behind Luxor Temple before they were relocated due to road widening, where you can stop for a drink, a snack or a full meal. Both have good toilets either inside or close by. When you reach the end of the bazaar you will see the River Nile. Cross the road and turn left enjoying a walk along the corniche towards Luxor Temple. On the way you will pass the Mummification Museum and the Tourist Ferry that crosses the Nile. Follow the outside of the temple back to Sindbads and relax with a nice cold drink. You never know you might meet us there as this is one of our favourite places.

If you enjoy this walk please do let us know.
