Where Your Donation Goes - Animal Welfare of Luxor - Egypt

As a UK Registered Charity we put your donation directly to improving the lives of the animals and their owners. We all care deeply for the animals and all give our time and efforts without charge for the betterment of all.

You may think that a regular monthly donation to Animal Welfare Of Luxor of just £10 will not make much of a difference to the lives of the animals but we believe in buying all that we can locally as things in general are much cheaper here but there is an added advantage that if we get it locally then it can be replaced locally. For example if we buy a head collar for a horse or donkey in the UK then it is not just the cost it is the size as horses and donkeys tend to be smaller here with narrower faces but we also have to get it to One roll of webbing as pictured costs just £2.Luxor and, just in case you hadn't noticed, this is a very hot country so lots of metal buckles against the skin is not a good idea. Once the head collar from the UK breaks the owner will come back to us asking for another one so AWOL is not showing them how to help themselves in the future.

A £2 roll of local webbing makes at least 10 donkey head collars which we stitch together to fit the animal. Once they have this locally made head collar it is easy for them to repair or replace it themselves and there are the added advantages that there are no metal buckles and AWOL is supporting the local economy.

AWOL Vet, Farrier and Mechanic

Though we all give our time free we will need to employ several people at the new centre and perhaps you would like to raise or supply the funds to support one of these:

AWOL Vet

An urgent requirement, as soon as funds allow, will be a full time vet and as vets are taught in English it will be a great help in communication as well. We need a highly qualified and dedicated vet so it is expected that we will have to pay a high wage of around £230 to £250 a month, yes a month, but that is an incredibly high wage here in Luxor. It is only reasonable to expect that our bill for medical supplies will increase dramatically as the vet will allow us to treat many more animals every day.

AWOL Farrier

There are so many horses and donkeys in the El Marise area. Conservative estimates put the number at over 2000 in total and there is no farrier. They have to come into Luxor so we need a farrier on site.

AWOL Mechanic

Not an immediately obvious choice for a charity that looks after animals but so many horses and donkeys pull carts all day, every day, yet often these carts are difficult to move before anything is loaded on them, as regular maintenance like greasing or replacing failed bearings is not as high on the priority list here as feeding the animal and the family.

We need the vet, farrier and mechanic to be fully employed and paid for by Animal Welfare of Luxor so that we can monitor and improve their work in order to keep our standards at the highest level.
